Join local author, Julie Masis for a reading and discussion of her new book, "How My Grandfather Stole a Shoe and Survived the Holocaust in Ukraine"
This very personal and accessible collection of rich stories is about her relationship with her Moldovan-born Grandpa Shlomo and their tender conversations about his daily life in the Obodovka ghetto under Romanian occupation and Nazi rule. Fighting to stay alive while watching many around him die of starvation and unlivable conditions, Shlomo's stories are tales of survival by way of luck, tenacity and wit combined with the courage and generosity of others. Julie will read passages from her book, share photos and take questions about Grandpa Shlomo, his extraordinary life and her own journey to understand the people and places in her own family history.
Julie Masis is the editor and publisher of the Russian Boston Gazette, a newspaper for Russian-speaking immigrants in Boston. She is also a freelance journalist who has written extensively about Jewish history. Her stories have been published in the Times of Israel, Jerusalem Post, Boston Globe, Christian Science Monitor, Montreal Gazette, The Globe and Mail, and in other newspapers and magazines. Other than journalism, she has also taught English to Buddhist monks in Cambodia, organized tours to the Khmer Rouge tribunal, and has recently learned to ice skate.
