Learn about the history of drag performance in the US with Matthew Wittmann, Curator of the Harvard Theatre Collection.

Over the course of the twentieth century, drag performance in the United States developed from something of a novelty act into an independent and impactful performance genre that permeated American culture. Take a virtual look at the history of drag performance in the United States through photographs, ephemera, and a variety of other archival materials held by Houghton Library at Harvard University.

Dr. Wittmann received his Ph.D. from the Program in American Culture at the University of Michigan. His scholarly work has focused on the cultural, material, and transnational history of the nineteenth-century United States and on the dynamics of popular entertainment in particular.

This program is in partnership with Wilmington Memorial Library and other local libraries.
